so, i have started a new blog. this one has served me well for the time i had it, but now i think i have outgrown the two cent hooker name. since i rarely crochet anymore...
the new blog is peanut butter yelley time, so i hope you'll continue to read over there. the usual bits about knitting will still be there, along with other things from in my head. that's the plan at least.
thanks for reading.

windmill bag pattern
wow, has it really been since may that i last posted here? i'm not a very good blogger, am i?
so here is a pattern for a bag inspired by a level of ninjatown, the brilliant tower defense game for the nintendo ds. somehow four paths swarming with mr. demon's minions converging in the center of the screen ended up as a modular knitted bag pattern. it's not very complicated, but i think it's clever. maybe. a little.
windmill bag

yarn: sugar and cream or other cotton yarn. i used three colors, less than one ball of each, but color choice is up to you.
sticks: US 6 straights and dpns, or you can do the whole thing on dpns if you like.
notions: split ring stitch marker, tapestry needle or crochet hook for seaming.
gauge: not really critical, knit at a gauge you feel is comfortable for you.
finished size: my tape measure is lost, but the finished product will depend on your gauge and number of cast on stitches, so measuring mine wouldn't mean much anyway.
skills required: garter stitch, i-cord bind off, i-cord, and seaming. too lazy to type up tutorials for i-cord bind off, if you don't know how, google does! ^_^
panel 1
with color 1, cast on desired number of stitches. for mine, i cast on 20. at a standard worsted gauge of about 5 stitches per inch, i would say that 20 is the minimum for a decent sized bag.
knit in garter stitch for 100 rows (50 garter 'ridges') or until desired length. knitting longer will give you a deeper (and maybe more ridiculous looking) bag. at the beginning of each row, slip the first stitch purlwise with the yarn in front as if to purl, then move the yarn back through the needles and knit to the end of the row. this will leave a neat braided-look edge that will make seaming very easy. after a few rows, mark one side as the right side of your work.
when desired length is reached, make 3 stitch i-cord bind off with the right side of work facing you. continue until you have three stitches left, then work regular i-cord until the i-cord is the same length as the rectangular panel. bind off the i-cord however you like.
panel 2
with the right side facing and the i-cord off to the left, using color 2 pick up and knit 20 (or whatever number you cast on for panel 1) stitches along the lower right edge of panel 1.

continue to knit panel 2 exactly like panel 1.
panel 3
knit just like panel 2, except pick up stitches along the lower right edge of panel 2.
make sure to always pick up your stitches with the right side of the work facing you and the i-cord off to the left.

panel 4
again, knit just like panel 2, picking up the stitches from the lower right edge of panel 3. i used only 3 colors for my bag, so my fourth panel used all three of them together. to do this, pick up stitches with color 1, join and knit one row color 2, join and knit one row color 3, then alternate colors each row without breaking the yarn, continuing to slip the first stitch of each row to maintain the braided edge.
when you finish panel 4, seam the cast on edge of panel 1 to the side of panel 4.

see why i named it the windmill bag now? ^_^
seaming
check out my awesome not MS paint because i use a mac picture to see how to seam up the sides.

sew the red sides together, the green sides together, etc. weave in all the ends. tie two of the i-cords together in a double knot to make one handle, tie the other two i-cords together for the other. yaaaaay you made a bag. fill it with fun things!

ichigo socks pattern

ichigo socks
yay socks. the stitch pattern looks like strawberries. so these are called ichigo socks. i guess if you made them in a different color they wouldn't really look like strawberries anymore. does not matter, i am still calling this pattern ichigo socks. i knit them both at the same time on one circular toe-up, but i don't think it would be hard to convert the pattern to some other method. these socks were made to fit me, and i have wide feet. if you need smaller, omit one lace repeat or go down a needle size. this is my first time writing a sock pattern (first time writing any knitting pattern, actually) so i apologize if it is unclear or full of errors. let me know if you find any, and i will fix them. ^_^
yarn: zitron trekking xxl, i used color 107, about half a skein, more if you want a longer cuff.
sticks: US 1.5 (2.5mm) 40 inch circular
gauge: 9.5 sts/inch, 11.5 rows/inch
finished size: about 8.2 inches around foot, unstretched. for different sizes, change needle size accordingly.
special stitches: double decrease (dd) - slip 2 stitches together as if to knit, knit next stitch, pass both slipped stitches over the knit stitch.
strawberry stitch pattern: worked over 13 stitches and 12 rows
rows 1 and 3- p all sts
rows 2 and 4- k all sts
row 5- (k1, yo, k4, dd, k4, yo, k1) three times
row 6- (k2, yo, k3, dd, k3, yo, k2) three times
row 7- (k3, yo, k2, dd, k2, yo, k3) three times
row 8- (k4, yo, k1, dd, k1, yo, k4) three times
row 9- (k5, yo, dd, yo, k5) three times
rows 10,11, and 12- k all sts
toes
using judy becker's magic cast on, cast on 30 sts (15 per needle) for each sock and knit one round, place marker to mark beginning of round of both socks.
round 1-k all sts
round 2-k1, k1fb, k to last two sts on needle, k1fb, k1, repeat for remaining 3 sets of sts.
repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are 39 stitches on each side of the needle, 78 stitches total per sock.
instep
work the strawberry stitch pattern across the top of the sock, work the sole in stockinette. continue until the sock is 2 inches shorter than the desired length.
heel
i used cat bordhi's wrapped short row method to make my heels, but you can use whatever kind of heel you prefer. wrap 13 stitches on each side (for each sock you should have 1 slipped stitch, 12 wrapped stitches, 13 unwrapped stitches, 12 wrapped stitches, 1 slipped stitch if you use cat bordhi's method). if you use cat bordhi's method, after picking up all the wrapped stitches, work two more pattern repeats (24 rows) with the strawberry pattern just on the instep of the sock, stockinette in the back above the heel, since the heel is very short using this method. otherwise, proceed to the cuff after finishing your heel.
cuff
work front and back needle in strawberry stitch pattern until desired length. if using 2x2 ribbing on the cuff, on row 12 of last chart repeat, increase 1 stitch at the end of each needle (increase 2 sts per sock). work in 2x2 ribbing for 1 inch. bind off using sewn bind off or desired method. weave in ends and block. send me pictures (please).
This pattern is intended for your personal use only. please do not post this pattern on any other site or claim it as your own. please ask permission before selling finished objects made from this pattern.

nearly 10,000....
...seriously. who are you people that read this?! identify yourselves! it's probably just my mom checking every 6 minutes to see if anything is new in my life. except for that part where my mom doesn't know how to operate the internet very well.
so i've been thinking lately that my blog name is becoming a misnomer. i'm not much of a hooker anymore, i've been cheating on my hook with my harmonies! i have some crochet projects planned for the future though... some amigurumi and maybe a blanket for my baby sis (if she behaves herself ^_^), and the comfy cardi from crochet me! designs to fuel the crochet revolution... i received the yarn for it today, elann lara in brick red. i've also been contemplating a rug... we'll see. i have not forgotten my beloved hooks, i promise!
want to see what we (meaning me and the boy, since he's sort of a knitter now too) have been up to? photo montage!

pattern:fake isle hat, from magknits
yarn:noro kureyon and nashua creative focus something or other
sticks:mine is done on 7s and 6s, his is done on 8s and a G hook
notions:none
time spent making:a long time, but we moved and had knitting hiatus in between. also this took me so long to finish because we did it all together row by row and i normally knit 3 times faster than him...
pattern modifications:for both, we eliminated 2 of the even rows between the decreases in chart 2. the hats would cover our eyes if we left them in! his hat has a garter stitch bottom so that the earflaps wouldn't look silly and a crocheted border around the edge.
the hooker's two cents:this was a fun pattern and a fun KAL with the boy. how cute is it that he learned circular knitting with dpns and fairisle all at once?! i'm so proud of him. ^_^

pattern:argosy, from knitty
yarn:noro silk garden, the best colorway ever, 2 skeins (plus about 4 yards of a third)
sticks:8s
notions:none
time spent making:maybe 4 days? not even?
pattern modifications:none
the hooker's two cents:love love love this scarf. love this pattern. fun to knit and easy to memorize. 2 balls (plus 4 yards...) makes a perfect length scarf. considering making a wrap sized one in malabrigo lace...

pattern:quant, from knitty
yarn:noro silk garden, 206, less than one skein
sticks:8s
notions:none
time spent making:half a day, once i figured out what the hell i was doing...
pattern modifications:made it one diamond narrower
the hooker's two cents:took me three tries, but i learned the entrelac thing and i love it. i also learned to knit backwards... very helpful for this sort of thing. this was a sort of practice project for the lady eleanor scarf/stole that i plan on making from this same yarn. the ending decreases.... i followed the pattern and it looked nothing like the beginning increases. i guess this is a common problem. oh well. i made it for a swap and the recipient loved it... yay.

pattern:moroccan slippers, from fabulous and flirty crochet by sweater babe? i think? made the medium size
yarn:paton's classic merino - too teal and leaf green... way less than 1 skein each
hook:F? i think.
notions:none
time spent making:a few hours
pattern modifications:none
the hooker's two cents:how cute are these? also made for a swap and well received. the only thing i don't get with this pattern is that the toe is definitely not centered, so there is a clear left and right... or rather there should be, the pattern says to make them the same for both...

pattern:super simple short sock, by meghann holcomb
yarn:lana grossa meilenweit fantasy
sticks:1s
notions:none
time spent making:5 or 6 days
pattern modifications:none
the hooker's two cents:yes, i made socks. shush. nothing to see here, people... move along.
WIPs.... still working on the oblique cardigan... on the first front, just have the fronts left to do. it'll get done eventually, it's just so hard to find time to work on it since i really need to focus on the lace pattern still. still working on the crochet block blanket CAL... i'm caught up on the monthly squares, but not on my filler squares. recently started the rusted root sweater in candy apple cotton fleece. there will be pictures once it starts resembling a sweater rather than a blob of knitted stuff. it's going slower than a top down raglan should because it hurts my hands to work on! three rows and my palms are cramping... i blame the cotton. cotton always makes me hands sore to work with. and i'm working on a felted bag, calla lily from the knitter's book of yarn, in a deep turquoise/jade color of cascade 220. busy, busy, busy.
life update? not much to report, though i will say that opening up my own yarn store looks better and better each day.
well that was epic. i should post more often so that my posts can be short.

back in california...
...finally. i was getting so sick of arizona. the air there is so dry! i think if i had to stay there for much longer, my skin would flake off completely. been in california for 4 days and already my skin is feeling better. i forgot how annoying windshield condensation is though...
unfortunately i have no pictures of my recent knitting projects... i've been making things for swaps and presents and i don't want to spoil the surprise!
i don't have internet at my apartment yet. i don't think we'll be getting it until the boy finds a job and we have some extra income. this will be an interesting experiment for us... no cable tv (no tv at all) and no internet at home. i hope to get more knitting and reading done this way!
so... over 8000 hits to this blog... who comes here?! i'm serious... i'm really curious about who is reading this. comment for me please? let me know who you are and how you got here? i'll post pictures next time if you do! i promise! ^_^

in which the boy knits and yelley spins.
i taught the boy how to knit. let's look at his progress.
project number 1: wonky dishcloth

project number 2: edgar scarf from knitty, disgustingly modeled by me

project number 3: fake isle hat from magknits

from wonky dishcloth to garter scarf to fairisle!? i'd say he's progressing well...
i recently learned how to spin using a drop spindle. here are my first cracks at it.

finished and ridiculously purple. maybe i have enough to make a hat for the beast...

in progress and much better. more even, at least.
i have several FOs that i haven't blogged about... but now that i know how to link images from flickr i will get on it eventually.
in other news, i'm moving back to california soon... in a couple of weeks, actually. so i might fall off the blogosphere for a while. not like i was ever consistently around anyway. ^_^

WIP update: oblique cardigan from knitty
some new progress pictures...

a finished sleeve.

8 pattern repeats into the back.

closeup of the back lace patterns.
knitting this seems to be going much more quickly now that i am not completely stupid at making and reading my own charts and now that i don't have to stop and move the work around on the needles all the time. i am loving the harmony wood needles from knitpicks, i really recommend them. i should be getting my complete set any day now...
in other yarny news, i'm doing a square-a-month crochet along on craftster and also on ravelry. each month there is a new pattern for a 12" crocheted block. it is pretty fun and the first month's pattern is nice. i'm using vanna's choice for this project too... i plan on using three colors, pea green, taupe, and linen.

i've also been doing some knitting/crocheting for swaps, but no pictures yet since i haven't sent to my partner yet.
upcoming projects... i ordered some yarn from knitpicks (telemark in flame heather for him, cilantro heather for me) to make a couple of pairs of knucks for the boy and me. we'll see if i can even get past making one... i am terrible at making pairs of things, i never want to make the second. maybe i can master both magic loop knitting and knitting both parts of the pair at once for this project. that may be a bit ambitious though. i also bought some green and blue wool (joann's sensations kashmira - it was on sale and i liked the felted swatch in the store) to make a french market bag; i'll start swatching for that when i get the new KP needle set. and i'm kicking around some designs for a crocheted sweater (knitpicks gloss in black) and a crocheted bag (paton's grace in natural and tangelo). i've got most of the bag design worked out, it is inspired by my travels in thailand and it incorporates this square i conjured up:

hopefully it will turn out the way it looks in my head...
that's all for now... back to not working. ^_^
